Extension makes Lions QB Jared Goff one of NFL's highest-paid players

Jared Goff is now the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Goff and the Detroit Lions agreed on a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed.

The $53 million average salary places him behind only the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow, who is at $55 million.

Goff, 29, had his second consecutive outstanding season with the Lions in 2023, racking up 4,575 yards, a 66.7 completion percentage and 30 touchdown passes with just 12 interceptions.

He had been scheduled to make $22.3 million next season.

Goff led the Lions to a 12-5 record to win the NFC North Division. Then they pulled off two playoff wins and a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

He is the third Lion to receive a lucrative extension during the offseason. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown signed a four-year deal worth $120 million and offensive tackle Penei Sewell inked a four-year extension worth $112 million.

Goff was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in January 2021, for Matthew Stafford.

At that time, he was only thought to be a stop-gap or placeholder for a future quarterback of the then-rebuilding franchise.

But Goff has helped Detroit win 21 games over the past two seasons, which is a franchise record for most victories in any two-season span. The 12 wins in 2023 also tied for the most wins in a season in franchise history, a mark that was set in 1991.
